Die Walküre
After the rapturous close of Act I—thanks to the thrilling chemistry of Leonie Rysanek and James King—this performance of Die Walküre could have easily lost momentum. Fortunately, Thomas Stewart and Berit Lindholm rise to the occasion and sustain the high level of artistry through the remainder of the opera.
Berit Lindholm's athletic soprano radiates youthful energy, perfectly suited to the role of Brünnhilde, while Thomas Stewart delivers a Wotan that is both noble and emotionally resonant. His dignified authority is matched by a warmth that humanizes the god's anguish.

Buy Walküre 69 + 70
Maazel's interpretation is peculiar, but he has Rysanek and King. Stewart and Lindholm are better when Stein is conducting:listen Walküre 70. So I recommend: buy both performances and enjoy them!

Adam continues to impress, the voice not especially beautiful, but the motivation and diction very clear. Martin shows again why she was so admired with her passionate Fricka. Lindholm's voice can be a bit of an acquired taste, yet she always conveys her character with strong, characterful singing. The Valkyries are very strong, Synek a memorable Helmwige.The sound is very good broadcast mono with no glitches I heard.

Beautiful Walkure in Excellent Sound!
As with his Das Rheingold in this cycle, Maazel's leadership sounds natural and unforced. His tempi are generally faster than other conductors, but they don't sound rushed. His singers are so dependable it's easy to take them for granted. Rysanek and King are just as good for Maazel as they are for Bohm. Rysanek's screams continue to be earth-shattering. King is, as always, a sturdy, manly Siegmund who holds his cries of "Walse!"in the first act for a very long time. Adam continues to impress

A Great Experience
I heard this recording with very great pleasure. It has good sound quality and the singers are excellent. I love Lindholm´s and Stewart´s interpretation as well as those of James King, Leonie Rysanek and of course Greindl as Hunding. Wonderful also the Fricka of Janis Martin in her Mezzo-Era. Maazel´s conducting of the splendid Bayreuth Festival Orchestra is awesome.
