Die Walküre

This performance of Die Walküre stands out for its rare alignment of vocal power, emotional urgency, and dramatic cohesion. Berit Lindholm brings a striking balance of vocal athleticism and warmth to Brünnhilde. Her performance is lithe and youthful, yet grounded in a rich, expressive sound that allows her to navigate the role's emotional arc with remarkable sensitivity.

Gwyneth Jones delivers one of her most impassioned portrayals of Sieglinde—raw, vulnerable, and deeply moving. Her performance burns with emotional intensity, setting the stage ablaze. Helge Brilioth complements her with a Siegmund that leans into lyricism rather than brute force, his youthful timbre adding poignancy to the doomed Wälsung's plight. As Wotan, Thomas Stewart is both vocally majestic and dramatically affecting, shaping his long scenes with clarity and heartbreaking resignation.

Superb performance

I saw this performance during my first session at Bayreuth (1970) - among them Böhm's Tristan - and until now it is one of my best experiences, esp. Stewart (legato!) and Lindholm in 3rd act are wonderful!

Thrilling performance

Horst Stein is sometimes thougth of as a safe but not the most exciting of conductors. Here however he strikes thrilling form. The performance takes off from the start. Thomas Stewart a wonderful Wotan and as his daughter Berit Lindholm is superb. Often singing at the same time as the mighty Nilsson were we inclined to overlook the glories of Lindholm ? Was there ever a more pasionate Sieglinde than Gwyneth Jones (dont think so) partnered with the excellent Helge Brilioth this recording should be in the collection of every Wagner lover. The sound is excellent.

Ravishing Gwyneth Jones

This is a first-rate Walkure and with a ravishing Gwyneth Jones as Sieglinde it becomes transcendent. Jones embodies Sieglinde with passion and complexity. Her teaming with Helge Brilioth's Siegmund is breathtaking. Berit Lindholm is a formidable Brunnhilde.

This is a really marvelous

This is a really marvelous performance. The sound is great, the conducting is great and the singing is fantastic. It is one of those cases where, because it is live, it has an unbeatable energy. Ridderbusch is strong and rich, Brilioth is in his best voice, Reynolds is an imposing authoritative Fricka and Stewart and Jones are at their best. Jones is absolutely thrilling and , to me, Stewart is superior here to his studio recording. Lindholm was the singer I knew the least and she is a great Brunnhilde. She is vocally strong and secure and her voice has a warmth and richness not always associated with the part. Highly recommended performance. One of the bets all round Walkures in my catalogue.
