Wagner: Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg (Excerpts) - Adam, Bode, Kollo, Sotin, Hirte, Nienstedt, Zednik, Rydl; Böhm. Bayreuth, 1975
$5.95
Description:
To mark the centennial of the Festspielhaus, the Bayreuth Festival presented a concert performance that is both celebratory and musically electrifying. Theo Adam, often the subject of divided opinion, delivers a revelatory Hans Sachs—singing with remarkable fluidity and expressive warmth, never forcing his rich bass-baritone even at the climaxes. René Kollo contributes an elegant and stirring Preislied, while Hannelore Bode and Hans Sotin, though limited by the abridged format, offer strong support as the Pogners. But it is Karl Böhm and the chorus and orchestra of the Bayreuth Festival who truly elevate this performance, rendering Wagner’s intricate textures with extraordinary clarity and feeling. Some occasional distortion is present, but it does little to diminish the impact of this exceptional concert.
NOTE:
This performance includes the overture and final scene.
