Otto Wiener takes a human-scale approach to Hans Sachs, delivering the role’s many conversational passages with intimacy while fully rising to the part’s dramatic peaks. Supporting roles are equally well cast: Eberhard Wächter brings characterful presence to Fritz Kothner, Hans Hotter lends gravitas to Pogner, and Gerhard Stolze makes for a spirited and puckish David.
