Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg
Featuring a true golden-age cast, this 1967 Radio Broadcast hums and bubbles with invigorating warmth and unquenchable passion under the sprightly baton of Rafael Kubelik. Thomas Stewart is an intelligent Sachs, who brings real weight and power to the great Act III monologue but who retains real lyricism for the role's more tender moments. It would be inconceivable that Gundula Janowitz's creamy-voiced Eva would pass him over if it were not for the ardent, fiery Walther of Sándor Kónya, who gives voice to an ethereal rendition of the Prize song. Thomas Hemsley is a nuanced Beckmesser thankfully devoid of caricature, and Franz Crass is a warm, fatherly Pogner. Brigitte Fassbaender may be the most sensuous Magdalena on record, and is paired expertly by the great Gerhard Unger, at his considerable best as David. Only the anemic-sounding women's chorus is a defect in this as well as the brief drop-out after "Am stillen Herd."

Best Meistersinger
The best version of this opera available. The sound is excellent stereo, as good as a studio recording. Kubelik's direction is perfect, and each singer is perfect for his role. Janowitz and Konya are probably the best on record, and Stewart, Unger, Crass, and Hemsley all give top tier performances. The quintet is a real highlight.Thanks to Opera Depot for making this hard-to-find performance available!

Not really thrilling interpretation of kubelik.. like a chamber-opera-concert! No live recording..poor beckmesser singer. Stewart good but too elegant and monochrome singing like in an "Liederabend " modus..Konya also not the ideal stolzing...But kubelik is in my opinion the problem: aß listener, YouTube could fall in sleep...

Great Meistersinger from Munich
Kubelik's is the warmest and most human Meistersinger I have encountered, and the cast is the best ever gathered for a recording, with Sandor Konya - far too underrecorded - the most glorious Walther imaginable. He recorded the arias for DG in 1960 but he is even better here.The rest of the cast is in the same division - even the minor roles. Thomas Stewart's Hans Sachs is masterly - the only challenger is Karl Ridderbusch on the Bayreuth recording under Varviso. Crass is a very human Pogner, in line with the conducting and Gundula Janowitz and Brigitte Fassbaender are superb as well. Recommended with enthusiasm.

A Strong Perfirmance

Kubelik's Masterly Meistersinger
This recording is widely recognized as one of the finest, perhaps THE finest, of Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg. All I can say is that it deserves its high reputation--great singing, and a conductor who paces the opera beautifully.It has been out of print for years and therefore hard to find. When a copy did turn up, the price was exorbitant. So I was delighted to learn that it could be had inexpensively from Opera Depot. No libretto, but that is easily obtainable elsewhere. I also like the packaging, in a soft plastic case with separate slots for each of the four discs, but scarcely thicker than a hard plastic Jewel Case--and it won't shatter if accidentally dropped, as hard plastic cases usually do.I expect I'll be buying more from Opera Depot.

Kibelik’s Masterful Meistersinger
I’ll leave it to the experts to rank Kubelik’s Meistersinger in the pantheon of available Meistersingers on record, but in my opinion, this is the best I’ve heard to date. And for a live recording, the sound quality is exceptionally good. I don’t often think of Kubelik when I thing Wagner, but this recording has changed my mind!

A very beautiful, note-perfect MEISTERSINGER. Gundula Janowitz is like no other Eva, unbelievably beautiful, like the sound you get when you dip your finger in wine and then stroke the edge of the glass, that eerie, penetrating harmonic. Franz Crass as Pogner is also very beautiful, lyric. Sandor Konya completes the poetical, lyric-sounding cast

This is an excellent recording,in no small part because of the sound quality: A high quality radio performance which could easily be studio recording of the time. A dream cast adds to to the attraction of this set.The under recorded Hungarian tenor Sandor Konya( a favourite at the met) is the Walter. His beautiful voice has an Italian bite to it. His phrasing and pointing of words reminded me of Di Stefano. The glorious pure silver of Gundula Janowitz gives us Eva and the fine American bass- baritone Thomas Stewart is very much a "singing" Sachs. An added plus is a clear and expressive David from Gerard Unger, and the peppering of the cast with prominent names in the lesser roles. If you have no other recording of the opera, head for this one.
