Solti was live much more better than in studio

Eine Exzellente Ring Aufführung mit den damaligen besten Sängern. Die Wiedergabequalität ist durchgehend sehr gut und Georg Solti gibt sein bestes. Diesen Ring kann ich empfehlen.

Solti is probably best known for his studio Ring cycle recorded for Decca between 1958 and 1966. It remains a colossal and lasting achievement. Many Ring lovers were introduced to the cycle through this recording (I certainly was). But a live performance is a different matter and here Solti shows why his reputation was so high. Overall, his conducting is more spontaneous in these performances and has a better flow. The singers are all terrific and it's especially good to have certain portrayals preserved here that were not recorded in the studio.David Ward sings the first two Wotans with beautiful, strong tone.. Amy Shuard sings an unfailingly lovely Brunnhilde: never does she wobble or shout. A minor indisposition may have caused her to leave out the final C in Siegfried and the C at the end of "Zu neuen Taten" in Gotterdammerung, but these are her only concessions (she sings both notes in a 1967 Ring cycle from Buenos Aires, also available from Opera Depot). She is alive to all of the warrior maid's nuances. I'm very grateful her portrayal was preserved, especially since she recorded so rarely in the studio. The rest of the cast is superb; every role is well sung and acted. Kozub and Jones are an especially memorable pair of Walsung twins. Windgassen and Frick are just as excellent here as they were in the studio. And so it goes.The sound is very listenable, if not spectacular. It won't get in the way of your enjoyment.

It's good to hear other than the "usual suspect"in a Ring of this era. Shuard, Ward and Stolze, because they are so good and so under recorded, steal the show, so to speak. Solti is marvelous.

A powerfully moving Ring. Solti at his greatest - superior, in my opinion, to his commercial recording. The British singers are at their peak and can stand comparison with any of their more famous and oft recorded contemporaries. Shuard and Jones (singing her first Sieglinde) bring Italianate line, beauty and sensitivity to their roles, Ward is a towering Wotan. Kozub is a wonderful baritonal and cultured Siegmund in the Vickers mould. The whole cycle is sung to a very high standard but the Walkure is simply outstanding. It helps to know that the production was by the great Hans Hotter himself.

It most satisfying to hear this cycle again.(I heard it live in 1965.)I agree with your own comments about Solti’s conducting .It is great to have on record performances of the finest quality by singers not heard in commercial recordings – Amy Shuard’s Brunnhilde, Josephine Veasey’s Waltraute,Gwyneth Jones’s Sieglinde, Ernst Kozub’s Siegmund,David Ward’s Wotan, Michael Langdon’s Hunding, the Rhinemaidens of Joan Carlyle Elizabeth Robson and Maureen Guy .

Yes, this cycle is interesting but let us have more cycles with Nilsson!!
