Wagner: Der Ring des Nibelungen (excerpts) - Varnay, Hotter, Nilsson, Aldenhoff, Windgassen, Vinay, Greindl; Knappertsbusch, 1957

$9.95

Description:

Hans Knappertsbusch was a conductor who truly thrived in the theater. While his studio recordings rarely capture the immersive experience he could create from the pit, this live performance—with one of the finest opera orchestras in history—does just that. The playing is remarkably transparent, with even the most intricate string passages emerging with clarity and precision.

Astrid Varnay takes on all three Brünnhildes and meets the varied demands of each with unwavering vocal control and stamina. The role of Siegfried is shared by Bernd Aldenhoff and Wolfgang Windgassen. Though such a split can occasionally challenge continuity, both tenors share a similarly lyrical approach, resulting in a surprisingly cohesive portrayal. Ludwig Suthaus, renowned for his Siegfried, makes a strong impression as Loge, showing how a great tenor can elevate this pivotal role.

Hans Hotter experiences some rough vocal moments throughout the cycle, but these never overshadow his penetrating interpretation of Wotan’s moral complexity. A young Birgit Nilsson is radiant as Sieglinde—a role she would seldom return to after her later association with Brünnhilde. Ramón Vinay rounds out the impressive tenor roster as Siegmund, a role that suits his baritonal tenor particularly well.

This generous compilation features nearly 130 minutes of excerpts from across the cycle, offering a wide-ranging view into an unforgettable interpretation.
