This release marks the first time the 1960 Bayreuth Ring Cycle has been made available in its original form, with Birgit Nilsson singing all three Brünnhildes. Previously, a later performance of Die Walküre featuring Astrid Varnay had been substituted. Nilsson is in sensational form, surpassing even the high standards she had already set in the role. Hans Hopf brings both vocal heft and boyish charm to his Siegfried, while Jerome Hines delivers a deeply moving Wotan in Die Walküre—a portrayal that leaves one wishing he had sung the role throughout the cycle. Wolfgang Windgassen uses the part of Siegmund to display his lyrical gifts to great effect, and the sound quality throughout is excellent, offering a clear window into one of Bayreuth's landmark Ring performances.
