Description:

For enthusiasts of opera in English, this cycle offers a valuable alternative to the legendary Goodall Ring. Though the role of Brünnhilde occasionally challenges Margaret Kingsley, she finds her stride in Götterdämmerung, delivering a particularly impressive performance in Act II. American tenor James McCray impresses as Siegfried, pairing vocal heft with lyrical phrasing and remarkable textual clarity. Raimund Herincx is a commanding Wotan, his warm, avuncular presence highlighting the depth of an artist who never quite reached star status. Simon Estes may lack the gravitas of a true bass, but his rich vocal color makes for an elegant and unusually refined Hagen. A standout among the cast is Lorna Haywood, whose slender but gleaming voice brings emotional urgency and thrilling top notes to Sieglinde. Ticho Parly offers a striking Loge, marked by vocal intensity even if his English diction occasionally falters. The stereo sound is very good throughout, although the performance does include a number of cuts.
