Great recording of the 1977 SeattleOpera English Ring, very well recorded.

Opera Depot has uncovered a real treasure with this previously unreleased Ring Cycle. Not only is it sung in Andrew Porter's beautiful English singing translation, it is well sung by many singers who either made few studio recordings or none at all. Henry Holt may not be a Furtwangler, but he knows what he's supposed to do and does it professionally. James McCray, our Siegfried, was not well-known here in the States; he sings lyrically with excellent diction. He knocks out a great top C in Act Three of Twilight of the Gods. Lorna Haywood deserves Andy's praise (see above). Her commitment to her role is exciting.Raymund Herincx sings with distinction and crystal-clear diction as do Paul Crook (a wonderfully creepy Mime) and Malcolm Rivers (an Alberich who wins applause after his Curse). I think Andy is a little harsh on Margaret Kingsley. She is a passionate Brunnhilde whose top is sometimes a little squally, but she gets all her B's and C's (and sings far better than Jane Eaglen and Deborah Voigt do in their cycles). Simon Estes is a frightening Hagen, his top ringing out excitingly. Geraldine Decker and Marvelee Cariaga sing their roles with distinction. There are a few trims along the way. A small portion of Wotan's Valkyrie monologue is cut, the first verse of the Rhinemaidens' song in Twilight is dropped, but don't let that deter you from acquiring this if you love Wagner and/or the Ring. The sound is excellent.
