DESCRIPTION

The first decade of the post-war Bayreuth Festival proved to be a golden age of Wagner singing, giving rise to a new generation of artists who would come to define these roles for decades. Fortunately, many of the performances were preserved through radio broadcasts, though these were usually made at the beginning of a production's run. Some of the most fascinating performances, however, came at the end of the season, when casts began to rotate and new singers assumed leading roles. These performances often carried an air of spontaneity that must have galvanized everyone involved.

In this instance, Paul Schöffler steps in for George London in the title role. Schöffler brings a rich bass-baritone that conveys both the Dutchman's torment and a measure of youthful vitality, making his bond with Senta all the more believable. Astrid Varnay is in magnificent voice as Senta, relishing the role's punishing tessitura while also scaling back her powerful instrument for passages of remarkable sensitivity, particularly in the Act II duet with the Dutchman. Ludwig Weber, another replacement, brings his customary elegance and warmth to Daland, lending the character far greater dignity than is often the case.
