Der fliegende Holländer
There are certain singers whose recording output was so meager that whenever I come across a recording featuring them I lunge at it. Johanna Meier is one such singer and I have to admit the more I hear from her the more I am astonished that she wasn't regarded as the reigning dramatic soprano of her time (which, in my opinion, she was.) Her outburst during the final moments of the opera is all you have to hear to understand how remarkable her talent was (I have provided a clip below.) For me the great surprise of the evening is the Dutchman of Guillermo Sarabia. The stoic elegance of Sarabia's voice makes him ideal in this role and his nuanced sense for German makes for some great moments particularly in the Act II duet with Senta. Spiro Malas delivers a bumbling yet doting Daland.

Follow-Up on WRONG INFORMATION?
Hi everyone. Just coming to this disucssion a few years later. The Daland is definitely Ara Berberian, whose voice I know very well. The performances dates that this cast (Sarabia, Meier, Berberian, Taylor, Siena, Curry; Rudel) performed together were:February 24, 1977March 10, 1977So it would have to be one of the two above performances. NYCO Does Wagner and Does It Well!
The NYCO didn't often do Wagner, preferring to leave him to the bigger theater across the plaza (the Met). This performance was from a run of Dutchman either in 1976 or '77. The sound is from an in-house source to judge from the proximity of coughs and comments, but one that captured the voices clearly over the orchestra.Guillermo Sarabia was better known for his Italian roles, yet he's a very effective Dutchman all the same, sounding both noble and haunted. His lowest notes are weak, but he shares that fault with many another interpreter of this role. Johanna Meier is a very good Senta with the essential, confident top register and a true sense of the character's obsession. If she doesn't quite match Rysanek or Varnay in the role, she is still very fine. Malas sings Daland well with his own distinctive take; it's not his fault if I keep hearing Sulpice from Daughter of the Regiment in his portrayal. Diane Curry is an assertive, well-sung Mary. According to another reviewer here, Richard Taylor was the Erik and he sings beautifully. Jerold Siena handles the Steersman more than capably. The chorus is excellent though perhaps a little underpowered; the orchestra plays well for Rudel who conducts an extremely good, if not world-class performance. NYCO was a fine company in its heyday as this performance shows.

Anyone care to contribute/clarify? Anyway, it's a smashing performance!!
