Wagner: Der fliegende Holländer - McIntyre, Rysanek, Talvela, Cox, Kollo; Varviso. Bayreuth, 1969

During the 50s and 60s Leonie Rysanek virtually owned the role of Senta. Her purity of tone coupled with her wild abandon made her a natural for this part. The legend goes that Thomas Schippers once stopped conducting at the end of the opera because he was so stunned by the opulence of her tone. In the title role, Donald McIntyre may not bring that same level of opulence, but he makes up for it by delivering a nuanced and psychologically dynamic character as opposed to some brooding cardboard cutout. Martti Talvela is an excellent Daland and we are treated to a young René Kollo as the Steuermann. The sound is excellent.
