Der fliegende Holländer

In the title role, Donald McIntyre may not possess the same vocal opulence, but he compensates with a nuanced and psychologically compelling portrayal, avoiding the stereotype of a brooding, one-dimensional figure. Martti Talvela delivers an excellent Daland, and the cast is further enriched by a young René Kollo as the Steuermann.

An Exciting, Well-sung Dutchman!

Rysanek's Senta was so famous that it's easy to forget she had sung it only once before in Bayreuth back in 1959. If possible, she is even more thrilling in this performance. Her voice was steadier, more of a piece by this time while her top remained a force-of-nature. Her high B's almost literally impale one to one's seat. She was also (in) famous for her screams, but the scream when she recognizes the Dutchman here is terrifying. I knew it was coming, yet I still jumped!McIntyre is a fine protagonist, his diction excellent, the voice steady and sure. Talvela sings extremely well as does Jean Cox. Mention should be made of a young Rene Kollo as the Steersman and Unni Rugtvedt as an unusually rich, ample-voiced Mary. She actually makes one sit up and take notice. The chorus and orchestra do fantastic work. Varviso demonstrates again what a fine and underrated conductor he was. The sound is excellent mono.Even if you have a number of Dutchmen, make room for this one - you won't be sorry!

This recording is very nicely done. Rysanek's voice project well and she has really pure tone. Mc Intyre and Rysanek have both very expressive voices and are also dramatically convincing. These are nuanced performances. Talvela is very poverful Daland and Cox (Erik) is singing with ease and beauty in his voice. It is nice to have Kollo as Steuermann. Varviso displays once again that he was great Wagnerian conductor, too.
