Wagner: Der fliegende Holländer (In Italian) - Protti, Dow, Picchi, Petri; Molinari-Pradelli. Milano, 1955
$9.95
Description:
A fun fact that Wagnerians like to point out is that Der fliegende Holländer premiered on the same day as Don Pasquale. Often they site that fact to highlight how forward-looking Wagner was, even in his early period, relative to his peers, but after hearing this performance, sung in Italian, I was struck by how rooted this opera is in the traditions of bel canto. Aldo Protti's smooth baritone never descends into shouting or barking, giving the character an incongruous softness that is quite refreshing.
