Pros:

  • A fun fact that Wagnerians like to point out is that Der fliegende Holländer premiered on the same day as Don Pasquale. Often they site that fact to highlight how forward-looking Wagner was, even in his early period, relative to his peers, but after hearing this performance, sung in Italian, I was struck by how rooted this opera is in the traditions of bel canto.
  • Aldo Protti's smooth baritone never descends into shouting or barking, giving the character an incongrous softness that is quite refreshing.

Cons:

  • None to mention.
