This has truly been the month of Wagner in different languages. Just like the English Ring we just released, this Italian language Holländer sheds new light and reveals Wagner's roots in Italian opera. Giuseppe Taddei sings the Dutchman. His smooth baritone is a welcome alternative to the barky approach that many take in this role and the Italian sheen to his voice gives the character a more sympathetic demeanor. Angeles Gulin sings Senta. Again she shows how Italianate this opera actually is. Her voice is smooth and silky. I imagine that she would be an excellent Ariadne. Pier Miranda Ferraro is a stentorian Erik. The conductor was not provided to me but he is truly excellent and takes inventive turns with the score. In general it is on the slower side but in a way that allows the listener to truly luxuriate in the melodies. The sound is good.
BONUS:
Giuseppe Taddei sings "Ha, welch ein Augenblick!" from Fidelio in Italian.
