Wagner: Das Rheingold - Vermeersch, Coster, Möhler, Winkler, Kélémen; Wallat. Köln, 1972

$9.95

Description:

Don't be fooled by the fact that the names on this recording might not jump out at you—the cast assembled here is truly impressive. They bring confidence and cohesion to this performance of Das Rheingold that could rival far more star-studded productions. Jef Vermeersch’s Wotan exudes charm and brash ambition, while Janet Coster brings rock-solid technique to Fricka, avoiding the usual caricature. The true star of the evening may be Zoltan Kélémen, whose Alberich is every bit the depraved villain yet retains a shred of dignity. The sound is generally good, with some brief drop-outs—presumably due to tape changes—all occurring during orchestral interludes and not disrupting the dramatic flow.
