Erich Kleiber in recent years has become overshadowed to a great degree by his son Carlos who had the unfair advantage of coming of age during the height of the recording business and leaving far more documents. In this performance, the Elder Kleiber shows, to a great extent, that the apple doesn't fall that far from the tree favoring brisker tempo. It is a pity that he didn't have a better orchestra at his disposal as the orchestra at the Colón makes many blunders throughout the evening. It also seems, to my ear at least, to be missing the Wagner tuben and bass trumpet which really add a lot to the overall color of the Ring. Herbert Janssen's baritonal Wotan is at ease throughout the evening. Previous versions of this performance were pitched almost a half-step high. I have fixed this flaw.

Excellent Rheingold in Listenable Sound

It is a pity that Erich Kleiber's Buenos Aires Ring isn't extant complete, but we do have this Rheingold, Walkure and Siegfried highlights, and a complete (as performed) Gotterdammerung. This Rheingold was once available pitched too high on the now defunct Archipel label. Andy has seen to it that the pitch has been corrected and the performance is far more listenable. Fred Destal was a regular in Buenos Aires for the Wagner rep (he is the Alberich in Kleiber's Gotterdammerung from the same year as well). His voice is rather hollow, but it suits Alberich very well and he makes a strong impression. Janssen was even better known at the Met, but he sings a beautiful Wotan here. Cavelti is quite good as Fricka and Svanholm, over ten years before the famous Solti studio recording, sings Loge very well.What I really enjoyed were the singers of the smaller parts. The two giants are very contrasted in voice: Danton more lyrical, List brutish and frightening. Roberto Maggiolo whines Mime to perfection and Angelo Mattiello sings Donner just as commandingly here as he did for Furtwangler three years later at La Scala. Lydia Kinderman is a wonderful Erda: there are no holes in her lovely contralto and she brings an appropriate sense of mystery to the whole affair. The three Rhinemaidens are an excellent trio. Kleiber leads a lyrical, fluent performance that keeps the opera moving.Don't allow the 1947 date scare you off of this gripping performance!
