Un Ballo in maschera
The highlight for me in this recording of Un Ballo in maschera is the Amelia of Teresa Kubiak. For some reason, despite possessing a gorgeous lyric-spinto instrument that sounded at home in almost every style and repertoire imaginable, this soprano was overlooked by recording labels during her career. Each time I hear her, I'm more amazed at her versatility and artistry—and her Amelia is no exception. She sings the role with ease, never allowing the demands of this notoriously difficult part to get the better of her.
Carlo Cossutta, another underrated singer, brings a burly sweetness to the role of Riccardo. Piero Cappuccilli's Renato approaches perfection, combining seamless legato, effortless high notes, and beauty of tone.

Exciting Performance in Good Sound!
Teresa Kubiak was a cover at the Met for years who only got to record Tatiana in Solti's Eugene Onegin studio recording and maybe a few other things. She is a lovely Amelia here, singing the part with ease and sophistication. She is worth the price of the set alone, but one also gets Cossutta's Riccardo and Cappuccilli's Renato, both in fine form. Biserka Cvejic sings very reliably as Ulrica, if without true distinction. That's also true of Maria Koromantzou as Oscar. Klobucar conducts a strong performance that would satisfy were we to see it today. If it isn't a classic evening of Verdi, it is a very good one that preserves some portrayals that would otherwise be lost to the ages.The voices are slightly recessed, but certainly audible.
