Liane Synek is the raison d'etre for this release and she lives up to her billing. Her voice is like a hurricane on top and she certainly conveys Amelia's frustrated dilemma. There is a lack of polish both to her technique and phrasing that might have been the reason she didn't have an international career. She was quite a star in Europe and may well have been happier there. I wish the Wagners had given her some Brünnhildes or an Isolde at Bayreuth, but that didn't happen. Roswaenge was 68 when this performance was given so he's obviously no longer in his prime. The tone is leathery and effortful (the last act aria is rather painful) and he has a tendency to over emote (his death scene is wonderfully hammy). Yet he still gives a performance. One can understand why he was so well-loved. He has no trouble singing the lower option both times in his Act Two song and he joins Synek on a mighty top C at the end of their big duet.Karl Sablotzke is adequate as Renato, his voice woolly and a bit unsteady. Annemarie Bessel is a powerful Ulrica, Doris Lorenz a joyous Oscar. The sound is generally adequate, but there is quite a bit of wow and flutter at the beginning. Bits and pieces are missing, including the first couple of minutes of Act Three. Ballo goes well in German.This is really for Synek and Roswaenge fans, not for those just learning the opera.
