Un Ballo in maschera
Martina Arroyo is the clear standout in this performance, offering a masterclass in Verdi singing. Her voice combines remarkable purity with commanding power.
Ludovico Spiess may not be a tenor for the ages, but his warm, steady tone brings a reliable presence to the cast. As Ulrica, Lili Chookasian is entirely in her element, drawing on the richness and depth of her resonant contralto.
There is some light skipping during the final minute of the opera, but it does little to detract from the overall impact of the performance.

Superb Performance in Excellent Sound!
Hearing Martina Arroyo in her prime sing the heck out of one of Verdi's most challenging roles is a real thrill. The way she is able to carry that full sound all the way up to the top is incredible. No one - not even Leontyne Price - is so exciting. She may not reveal the depths of Amelia's character as do Callas or Gencer, but she bows to no one in terms of vocal security. A classic performance!Spiess sings more lyrically here than he would later in the decade when his voice began to splinter. He makes a beautiful sound throughout and joins Arroyo for an exciting account of their Act Two duet where you really feel like you're at the opera! Mastromei gets the biggest hand of the evening for his magnificent"Eri tu". Along with Arroyo, he provides another classic performance. Chookasian is a wonderful Ulrica with her rich, baritonal low notes. Mariconda is a lovely Oscar. Molinari-Pradelli leads a very memorable performance (despite some weird cuts).The sound is almost all one could wish for. I didn't hear the "skipping" Andy wrote about above. If you love this opera or these singers, you must get this!
