Un Ballo in Maschera
Luciano Pavarotti always seemed to enjoy himself as Riccardo (or Gustavo) in Un Ballo in Maschera, and he is heard to great effect in Claudio Abbado's almost sprightly reading of the score. His light, piercing and incredibly beautiful sound lends itself to the playboy of act one, the ardent lover of act two, and the pensive ruler of act three. Shirley Verrett sings Amelia continuing her foray into the soprano Verdi role. Her Amelia is anguished (occasionally wooly) but remarkably secure. If Elena Obraztsova sounds a bit more like Carmen than Ulrica, the tone is certainly spectacular. Piero Cappuccilli is a big, plush-sounding Renato, and the supporting cast features strong turns from Luigi Roni's sinister conspirator and Daniela Mazzucato's lively Oscar.

Superb performance from the best La Scala had to offer in the 70s
I went to a later performance in the run (a Sunday afternoon early in Jan 1978 after the Requiem and Don Carlo on the 2 previous evenings) when Verrett was substituted by Zampieri. This recording brought back joyful memories of my first ever visit to Italy. Pavarotti is on top form (who is the idiot who can be heard boing occasionally?) and Cappucilli's eri tu sends shivers down the spine. Abbado leads a riveting performance. For this sort of recording the sound is not bad, but not a patch on studio digital sets of course. At the very cheap price this set is an excellent buy.

Great Performance and Excellent Sonics
A chance to get to enjoy Pavarotti in his creamy, rich and easy prime singing an opera he loved to sing. Excellent work from Cappuccilli, as well. Everyone else is decent and Abbado always gets everything back on track whenever it gets off. Overall, very enjoyable and decent sound.

Excellent Performance in Very Good Sound!
In her autobiography, Verrett discusses how she wasn't pleased with her performance here, but hearing it again after many years she thought she had been too hard on herself. She is correct. Her Amelia is passionate and very well sung, the top notes effortless, the scale and phrasing all one could want. That being said she still sounds like a mezzo singing a soprano role. Perhaps wisely, she never sang the role again.Pavarotti, in one of his best roles, is magnificent. Here he still sings like he's actually thinking about what he's singing. Cappuccilli sings like a baritone God and the audience loves him for it. Abbado conducts an exciting performance and the supporting cast is first-rate.The sound is good, the voices a little recessed. This has the advantage though of giving a better idea of what the voices sounded like in the house.Ballo lovers and fans of the singers (especially Verrett's) should get this!
