This performance of Un Ballo in maschera pairs Leyla Gencer and Carlo Bergonzi at the height of their vocal powers. Although temperamentally these artists were rather different, their approach to Verdi was always from a bel canto perspective. Gencer, in particular, displays an astonishing capacity at spinning stunning legato lines. Mario Zanasi makes an impressive contribution as Renato although the evening belongs to Gencer and Bergonzi. The sound is good.
