This set is the soundtrack of the TV broadcast made while on tour in Japan (the DVD of it is available from VAI). While not an extraordinary performance it is a very good one with strong performances from everyone and a surpringly good one from Tucci. I say surprisingly not because Tucci wasn't good, but because this role isn't usually associated with sopranos who regularly sang roles like Aida, Butterfly, Desdemona, and the Trovatore Leonora. But Tucci is a lovely Gilda, one who not only sings Gilda's brief coloratura well, but also sings all the traditional interpolated high notes. Who knew she had them?Protti makes a good, strong sound and knows his way around the role very well. Poggi is rather dry-voiced and doesn't do anything particularly memorable, but he gets the job done. The supporting cast is filled with Italian natives who know how the opera is supposed to go. Basile makes all the usual cuts and keeps things moving.The sound is excellent throughout. A very enjoyable performance then, well worth hearing, especially if you like Tucci!

I enjoyed this performance very much. The sound is good. I found all 5 principles to be most enjoyable and while they are no unfamiliar, they were never considered the superstars of the time. Di Stasio and Washington are strong as the murderous brother and sister. Poggi, while not the most beautiful voice one has heard, is an honest and committed Duke. I really like Protti as Rigoletto. I find beauty and warmth in the voice and portrayal. Tucci is the reason I bought the recording and she satisfies. There is a hint at slightly questionable pitch but it is minor and rare. For the most part she brings great beauty of tone, warmth, more heft than most Gilda's can muster, and some pretty spectacular high notes. It is not a role one thinks of often with sopranos who also did Aida, Leonora, Desdemona, Amelia but Tucci convinces one that she is the right voice for the role. Recommended.
