Good Performance in Mediocre Sound

I enjoyed this Rigoletto as much as I could with its recessed sound. The ear adjusts, but it takes some concentration. Domingo is in great shape as is Paskalis, an appreciated if underrated, artist. His "Cortigiani" is very powerful. I wish we could hear him better, but things are what they are. Moser sings a lovely Gilda, complete with an excellent trill and a strong E-flat for the end of the "Si, vendetta!" Her "Caro nome" is exceptionally well sung. The other singers are more than competent. Singer keeps everything together well, no easy task when there probably wasn't a lot of rehearsal time. The sound is too much of a challenge for casual listening, but if you're a fan of any of the singers you'll make the effort.

Very convincing performance by Moser, Domingo, and Paskalis.

I enjoyed this performance of Rigoletto very much. The sound is rather recessed, but the ear adjusts quickly enough. Domingo sings very well and sings a different ending to “Parmi verder” that is quite lovely. Moser is excellent, interpolating the usual high options into Gilda’s music (though not a high E at the end of “Caro nome”). She makes a very assertive, positive Gilda. Anyone who likes her should get this. Poskalis is marvelous, an underrated artist. The other singers are fine. The performance here is on pitch, unlike another company’s release of this. Keep in mind that the diapason in Vienna is slightly higher and continues to be so today.
