Messa da Requiem

This performance of Verdi's Requiem features strong contributions from chorus, orchestra, and soloists, with particular distinction going to Renata Scotto. In the mid-1970s, Scotto began her transition into more dramatic repertoire, and for a time, she was able to combine the lyricism of her earlier years with a newfound dramatic slancio. While her dramatic soprano career never fully reached its anticipated heights, this performance captures her at an ideal moment—fully equipped to meet Verdi's soaring and spiritually intense writing for the soprano soloist.

Flaviano Labò and Nicolai Ghiuselev also contribute finely crafted performances as the tenor and bass soloists, respectively, bringing clarity and dignity to their roles.

Terrific Verdi Requiem in Excellent Sound!

The Sofia Chorus and Orchestra are very good here as is the conducting, but most people will want to know how the soloists fare. They fare very well indeed. Scotto is superb. This was recorded before her voice began to show signs of wear and tear later in the decade. She soars, pleads, scolds, and ultimately wins over any objections some may have about her appropriateness for this role. Mattiucci has a fine voice and blends beautifully with Scotto in the Recordare. Labo demonstrates again how good and underappreciated he was during this period. Ghiuselev sounds like the voice of God himself. All listen to and respond to each other with grear care. The stereo sound is very good too. If you love the Verdi Requiem as I do you must hear this.
