Herbert von Karajan is known for his remarkable ability to assemble first-rate casts of singers that complement each other, and in this performance of the Verdi Requiem, he has certainly done so. The quartet of singers here is among the finest I’ve heard, with special mention going to the ethereal Renata Scotto. Although each singer shines in their respective moments, the most remarkable section is the Offertorio, where the ensemble's level of awareness rivals that of the best madrigal choirs.
