Messa da Requiem
The appeal of this performance lies in the largely American group of soloists assembled. Johanna Meier, a uniquely versatile artist, lets her shimmering soprano shine in the "Agnus Dei" and asserts commanding presence in the "Libera me". Norman Treigle, who left relatively few recordings in the Italian repertoire, is captured here with a voice that blends darkness and warmth, effortlessly meeting Verdi's technical demands. While the sound is a bit murky, the rare and compelling vocal performances make this a valuable document.
