Mario Del Monaco is in rare form here, and by far the best reason to listen to this Otello, which is captured in occasionally fine but usually acceptable sound from the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires. In the recording studio, Del Monaco was usually content to shout his way through his roles. Not so here, as the histrionic death noises during “Nuin mi tema” indicate. The supporting cast is not quite as notable, and only Delia Rigal’s sweet-sounding Desdemona rises to Del Monaco’s level.
