Otello

This performance of Otello, recorded in Vienna at the end of World War II, offers a distinctly German take on Verdi's masterpiece. The Germanic quality of the presentation is actually a happy byproduct of the cast's close connection to the text and meticulous attention to diction. One not only revels in the impressive vocal talent, but also has the sense that the performers are fully inhabiting their characters.

Hilde Konetzni is ravishing as Desdemona, bringing ethereal grace and sumptuous vocal color to the role. Paul Schöffler lends a gruff elegance to Iago, alternating between terrifying and charming with remarkable ease. Torsten Ralf, in the title role, is not quite as compelling as his colleagues. His tenor is undeniably robust, but he lacks some of the dramatic intensity that is so essential to the part. Karl Böhm draws playing of remarkable precision and dramatic intensity from the orchestra.
