Otello

This recording of Otello is a powerful testament to why Georg Solti's tenure at Covent Garden remains the stuff of legend. Far from mere reputation, the performance brims with intensity, polish, and dramatic conviction.

Mario Del Monaco and Tito Gobbi are ideally matched as Otello and Iago, their vocal and dramatic chemistry driving the opera's central conflict with gripping force. Raina Kabaivanska brings both radiance and resolve to Desdemona, capturing the character's strength without sacrificing vocal warmth. Josephine Veasey offers a standout Emilia—detailed, expressive, and arguably one of the finest on record.

A great performance caught on the wing

This performance is so exciting. Solti at his absolute best in the Sixties galvanising all at Covent Garden, as those of us old enough to have been there well remember. And what a cast - all in their absolute prime, and singing as if their lives depended on it. I am transported right back to those golden days.

Superb Performance in Excellent Sound!

This performance was one of the great nights at Covent Garden under Solti. Everything comes together in an exciting, harrowing performance that stays in the memory long after it has ended. Solti leads with excitement and a sure sense of pacing the drama. He makes no cuts, playing the complete ensembles in Acts Two and Three and making sure the "throwaway" lines in the final moments of last act are sung. The three principals are superb. Del Monaco is having a great night with his ringing top notes and dramatic phrasing. His death scene is a little on the hammy side, but it works. Gobbi plays a cheerfully malevolent Iago and complements Del Monaco well. Kabaivanska is a lovely Desdemona, her passionate cry of "Oh, Emilia, addio!" in the last act tearing at your heart. Veasey is an assertive Emilia and Ward a luxury as Lodovico. Both Lanigan and Dobson are memorable in their roles. The chorus and orchestra are equally good. The sound is excellent broadcast mono with no glitches that I heard. Highly recommended!

Let Down

I really wanted to enjoy this performance as I love Del Monaco as Otello. His voice is strong and firm and I was not disappointed in his performance. Desdemona, however, was another matter. Her voice is on the shrill side although she could keep up with Del Monaco in their duets. The sound was not as clear as I would like so that was a disappointment. Solti's conducting was fine moving the opera at a decent pace. Enjoyable if you like Gobbi and Del Monacl.

Gute Aufnahme
