A great performance, great sound, I was only thrown off by some lack of coordination between pit and stage, but a well-known performance I am glad to have and grateful OD had made this available.

This Otello captures Del Monaco at his peak. The voice was still functioning well and his characterization was more detailed, less frantic than it would soon become. Gobbi is an insidious presence and sings well with his trademark excellent diction and pointed tone. Tucci sings like an angel and is a lovely, heartbreaking Desdemona. Clabassi is an unusually assertive Lodovico with his distinctive bass voice. I think Anna Di Stasio is the Emilia and she is also excellent. Erede leads a very satisfying performance, preserved in great broadcast sound.Highly recommended to all Verdians!Incidentally, the video of this performance can be purchased from VAI Audio or seen on YouTube.
