It is simply a wonderful realization of Verdi's masterpiece. Antigone Sgourda, one of the most beautiful voices and gifted with a real outstanding musicality gives us a very touching Desdemona. Kari Nurmela is a very convincing Jago and of course Prevedi is an outstanding Otello. Nello Santi, one of the greatest Italian conductors has a very special authenticity in Verdi. Thanks for publishing this wonderful registration.

Bruno Prevedi was one of those singers who was very good and sweet-natured, but who never really captured his audiences' imagination. By the time he did this performance he was only 49, but his brief time in the operatic spotlight had come and gone. His is a very lyrical Otello, outbursts kept to a minimum, emphasizing the dynamic contrasts in the role that many more robust tenors ignore. He has the notes (except the optional top C in Act 3), yet he is more effective in the quieter, more introspective moments (his death scene is very moving).His Desdemona, Antigone Sgourda, has a lovely voice and she contributes a strong, well-sung portrayal. She too petered out quickly after recording Donna Anna for Barenboim in his first studio recording of Don Giovanni. A pity: she was a fine singer. Kari Nurmela is a splendid Iago and it is a treat to hear a young Francisco Araiza as Cassio. Nello Santi does not make the traditional cuts common for so long. He knows how this opera goes and conducts a strong performance.This was taken from a house tape, but the voices are clearly heard. Aside from one brief tape gurgle in Act 1, the sound is excellent.Recommended to fans of the singers.
