Oberto
The strong cast assembled for this rarely performed early Verdi gem makes an excellent case for the opera's dramatic and musical value. Simon Estes is commanding in the title role, bringing vocal authority and nuance. Angelés Gulín offers a sumptuous soprano that seems tailor-made for Verdi, while Viorica Cortez impresses with a noble and expressive Cuniza.

Fine Performance, But Major Sound Issues on Disc Two!
This performance of Verdi's rarely heard first opera is a very good one. Estes sings beautifully with a great sense of line in the title role. It's understandable why he became so well-known later on. His colleagues are all excellent too, especially the women who really make something of their roles.But - and it's a big "but" - there is something seriously wrong with the mastering of disc two. The sound has been very good up to that point, but the transfer volume is so low one can't hear the music. It also sounds like there was some sort of downloading issue that was never resolved. This performance was available commercially elsewhere in much better sound. I hope Andy can fix the problems on disc two as I'd love to enjoy the rest of the performance.
