We often refer to older recordings as "historic", particularly when they feature artists of the highest calibre at the height of their powers, as in this performance of Nabucco. Yet this account is historic not only for its artistic distinction but also for its resonance as a cultural document of post-war Italy. Few works are as emblematic of Italian nationalism as Nabucco, and that collective identity is acutely felt—especially at the conclusion of "Va' pensiero", where the audience's response carries the weight of catharsis, a release from the traumas endured earlier in the decade.

Artistically, the Neapolitans had much to feel proud of. Maria Callas is captured here at just 26, already in electrifying command of her vocal and interpretive powers. Her coloratura is incisive and thrilling, her high notes monumental. Her deep connection to the text and innate musicality, coupled with a profound affinity for Italian style, point to her ultimate trajectory as one of the greatest artists of all time.

Gino Bechi brings a potent mixture of elegance and bluster to the title role, relishing the upper register and imbuing the stage with a fierce intensity.
