Pauline Tinsley is the Lady Macbeth in another performance of this opera already available from Opera Depot. That one is sung in English. Tinsley is just as smashing here as she was in the earlier performance. She had had more experience in the role and is just as effective in Italian. Perhaps some of her coloratura here and there is a little smeary, but I have no other criticism of her. The top notes are thrilling (the D-flat at the end of the Sleepwalking scene is superb), she trills where she's supposed to, and digs into the text with specificity and passion. Not even Callas or Gencer make as much of the text as she does. A classic portrayal!Sarabia is even better than he was with Marisa Galvany two years earlier, possibly because he was paired with a colleague who was more willing to share the stage with him. He sings his last act aria beautifully with real style and pathos. What a shame he died so young!Plishka is very fine as Banquo, another singer too often taken for granted. Frank Little is a capable Macduff. Dana Krueger is a memorable Lady-in-Waiting as is the baritone who plays the Doctor (too bad he is not identified.) Conlon conducts with the skill we know from his many other performances, but cuts the Witches' allegro chorus from the first scene - why? Macbeth isn't a long opera.This is taken from an in-house source and the transfer level is rather low, but the voices are always audible. All Macbeth fans should have this!

Like Andy, I am a fan of the soprano Pauline Tinsley. I saw her many times, including some performances as Lady Macbeth, and she was magnificent. This performance finds her in thrilling voice with full-blooded coloratura as well as much subtler effects, but just listen to her final note of Act 1. High notes aren’t everything, but my word, they can be exciting! None of the cast lets the side down but the main reason to acquire this is for Pauline Tinsley. You won’t regret it.
