This German Macbeth is notable mostly for the fact that it features Christel Goltz as Lady Macbeth. Goltz’ voice may not be a perfect fit for all of Verdi’s vocal demands, particularly the coloratura which seems slightly labored and lacks the fire that makes a Verdi cabaletta so exciting, however she brings an alluring glamor to the part, making her Lady seem all the more formidable and at times strangely sympathetic. Hans Braun’s name will likely not be mentioned alongside some of the great Verdi baritones of his day but he acquits the demands of the role admirably. Walter Kreppel brings booming gravitas to the role of Banquo and Anton Dermota delivers a honey-voiced Macduff.

I LIKE VERDI' S MACMETH IN GERMAN

"Along with Don Carlo, Verdi’s Macbeth stands as the only opera by the maestro that I can thoroughly enjoy performed in German. Rehearsing the 1960 Vienna recording, conductor Argeo Quadri adopts a measured, deliberate tempo. This expansive pacing allows for an exceptionally lucid reading of the score by both the orchestra and the ensemble. The overall result is remarkably cohesive and transparent.As the titular lead, Hans Braun delivers a vocally robust performance, while Walter Kreppel delivers precisely what is expected of him. Christel Goltz successfully captures the dramatic essence of Lady Macbeth, though she occasionally appears to be testing the absolute limits of her vocal capabilities. Conversely, Anton Dermota emerges as a delightful surprise.Curiously, I hold this particular rendition in high regard—perhaps solely for the striking clarity yielded by the voices and the orchestra. While it may lack the nuanced sensitivity uniquely demanded by Macbeth, the sound quality is excellent."

Eine Aufnahme, die sich lohnt anzuhören. Alle Sänger geben ihr bestes. Vor allem Anton Dermota in seiner kurzen Arie ist beeindruckend.
