Anja Silja's voice was surprisingly well-suited to early Verdi. Her voice was slender and moved very well but it also had great cutting power. In this performance of Macbeth, which she sings still in her twenties. She brings a youthful innocence which she uses to her advantage by creating a contrast to the inherent malevolence of the character. Her pianissimo d-flat at the end of the "Sleepwalking Scene" is truly remarkable. It is a shame that she didn't sing Abigaille or Odabella during this period of her career. The rest of the cast is good but it is her show. The sound is very good.
