La Traviata
This recording showcases one of opera’s most legendary duos, Montserrat Caballé and José Carreras. Their on-stage chemistry is palpable, and their voices share a striking similarity—both possessing essentially lyric qualities with the ability to expand into spinto territory when needed.
Like many sopranos, Caballé excels in "Ah, fors'è lui" but is less comfortable in "Sempre libera." However, once that vocal challenge is behind her, she settles into the role, delivering an impassioned and tender portrayal. Carreras is in excellent form, even treating listeners to the cabaletta with a thrilling high C. Vicente Sardinero offers a stern yet compassionate Germont, completing the central trio.

Caballe and Carreras in their Prime!
Caballe didn't sing Violetta often as Act One tended to give her some problems. Her studio recording under Pretre is very fine and there (with the possibility of retakes) she sings an exciting"Sempre libera". She is in excellent vocal shape in this performance and sings a commendable "Follie...Sempre libera", taking it all quite rapidly. She manages the D-flats as well as she can and moves on. She is better suited to the other acts and there she really hits her stride. As always she is more relaxed in front of a Liceu audience so she dares more than she normally would. To underline Violetta's illness she offers some very convincing coughs that made me think she was actually ill! If her characterization isn't as detailed as Callas' or Sills', she still proves to be a beautiful heroine .Carreras is simply marvelous, the voice sweet and strong with a ringing top. He gives us an excellent top C at the end of "O mio rimorso" and generally makes us care more about Alfredo than we normally do. Sardinero is a good Germont, if not a distinctive one. The supporting singers are all capable (though another rehearsal wouldn't have hurt anyone.) Masini keeps everything together pretty well.The sound is good; it seems to be from a downloaded source as it is very tinny. The pitch may be slightly sharp, but not enough to prevent enjoyment. If you love Caballe and Carreras, you need this!
