La Forza del destino
It's hard to imagine a better argument for the merits of La Forza del destino. As Leonora, Martina Arroyo solidifies her place as one of the greatest Verdi sopranos of her generation. The baritonal quality of Carlo Cossutta's tenor might suggest challenges with the stratospheric tessitura of Alvaro, yet he navigates the role with complete technical assurance. Piero Cappuccilli's Don Carlo strikes an ideal balance between the character's relentless thirst for revenge and his innate nobility. Nicolai Ghiaurov and Fernando Corena are well-paired as Guadagno and Melitone.

Excellent Performance in Very Good Sound!
Martina Arroyo was so easy to take for granted because she was always good. She wasn't particularly intense or fiery, but you knew you were always going to get a first-class vocal performance. That's the case with this Forza recorded in-house in Paris sometime in 1977. The top notes soar, the middle is rich and steady, it's all beautiful. As Eric S. points out below there's not a lot of specificity of character, Arroyo paints in much broader strokes, but you never have to worry about her ability to sing the music.Cossutta is heard in excellent form as Alvaro. Kudos to the audience for allowing the clarinetist to finish before they begin their enthusiastic applause of his big Act 3 aria (usually the solo is drowned out as soon as the tenor finishes his final phrase). Cappuccilli is in fine shape as Carlo, interpolating several high As into his part (oddly, he does not interpolate a top G# at the end of his cabaletta). Ghiaurov and Corena are great together and Pring is a fine Preziosilla. The "Sleale!" scene for Alvaro and Carlo is cut. Whoever does Arroyo's offstage scream when Leonora is stabbed in Act 4 deserves a raise. Rudel conducted just about everything well and that is the case with this performance. The sound is good for an in-house recording (the tapist sat still and didn't jostle the mic) and the voices are clearly captured; the pitch of the tape is also correct. Forza fans will love this.

Solid Forza
This is overall a solid performance of the great score, unfortunately missing the "Sleale" duet. Arroyo certainly had a beautiful voice, but one often has the feeling that she is "just singing" (beautifully), not giving voice to Leonora's desperate experience. Cossutta is of special interest to me, having been powerfully impressed by him on the stage. As a recorded voice, however, his is not the most exciting, lacking the "ping" one associates with tenors in this great part. Best on this set are Ghiaurov and Corena.

Who would have believed it!
I didn't know that either Nicolai Ghiaurov and/or Padre Guardiano were conductors in their spare time...!
