Verdi: La Forza del destino - Souliotis, Menippo, Sereni, Mattiucci, Vinco; de Angelis. Napoli, 1966

$9.95

Description:

This performance of La Forza del destino captures Elena Souliotis during the brief but remarkable window when her voice was in full bloom and the operatic world appeared to be hers for the taking. In hindsight, casting a soprano in her early twenties in one of Verdi’s most punishing roles may seem questionable, but Souliotis defies that conventional wisdom with a performance of astonishing immediacy. Her youthful tone lends an almost angelic purity to “La vergine degli angeli”, and her “Pace, mio Dio” is both impassioned and haunting.

Carlo Menippo is something of a letdown as Alvaro. While he meets the technical demands of the role, his interpretation lacks depth—delivering attractive but emotionally detached singing. In contrast, Mario Sereni offers a compelling Carlo, balancing elegance with menace and making a strong dramatic impression throughout.
