I thought this performance would be at least good given the lead singers, but in the event it was much more than that. Ricciarelli was all of 31 and in her freshest voice. Absent are the ungainliness and the effortful, unsteady high notes that would plague her in the not-too-distant future. Her Act Four scena (complete with one verse of the cabaletta) is some of the most accomplished singing I've ever heard her do. Her effective range still stops at top C so she doesn't try for a D-flat at the end of Act One, but other sopranos offer that. Bergonzi sings like the bel canto artist he was, defining the terms elegance and class. The high B at the end of "Di quella pira" costs him some effort, but he makes it and the audience is most appreciative. Bruson is a stellar Di Luna. His account of "Il balen" sounds like one of the great Italian baritones from an earlier generation is singing. A man in the audience shouts out an audible "Bravo, Renato!" at its conclusion. He does as well throughout the performance. Berini is a lusty, gutsy Azucena who also has an excellent trill for "Stride la vampa". She was one of the last great Italian mezzos, ending the opera with a thrilling top B-flat. Silvano Innamorati is an unusually good Ruiz while Luciana Palombi's Inez has difficulty dealing with the outdoor acoustic, singing badly sharp in her first lines.This sounds like it was taped by someone with a good seat in the audience. Trovatore fans should get this!
