Il Trovatore
Carlo Bergonzi brings elegance to Manrico, portraying him more as a passionate lover than a vengeful warrior. Fiorenza Cossotto is a fiery, untamed Azucena, while Piero Cappuccilli delivers one of the most stunning renditions of "Il balen" imaginable. Listening to such an ensemble at the height of their powers is a rare privilege, and one can only hope to experience artistry of this caliber in a live setting.

One of the best live recordings of Il Trovatore
I had heard of this recording for years and was glad to see that Opera Depot carried it. This stands alongside Price’s other great live recordings from 1961 with the Met and 1962 at Salzburg, a part of the great “hell-bent-for-leather” performances of the 50s and 60s, when the 4 soloists and conductor performed not just as if their lives depended on it but as if the future of Italian opera depended on it. It’s also great to hear Bergonzi live in this role to compliment his great studio recording. The sound is excellent and all the soloists seem to keep trying to one-up each, and given the more formal reputations of the other soloists, it was probably Price who pushed them to it, to amazing effect. Stands with Del Monaco/Tebaldi, Del Monaco/Gencer, Callas/de Stefano, and the aforementioned earlier Price and Bergonzi recordings as one of the great performances.

Never better!
This is truly an exceptional performance of Il Trovatore. All principals are firing on all cylinders singing signature roles of their respective careers. I have been listening to this opera for over 50 years yet this recently acquired addition to my library has rekindled all the excitement for this piece that one has upon first discovering it. If you are a "Trovatore" fan you must hear Bergonzi, Price, Cossotto and Cappuccilli at their best by savoring the fire in this performance. Bravi tutti!

an excellent performance
This Il Trovatore is an excellent performance from Buenos Aires with the usual cuts.Maestro de Fabritiis leads an all-star ensemble with fire and energy. Price is excellent except an unnecessary high note in the 4th Act, Bergonzi is more heroic than usual and Cappuccilli is very similar to Bastianini. Cossotto sings without her later manierism and Vinco is a very good Ferrando. Unfortunately this level we cannot find today.

Terrific Trovatore!
This Trovatore is terrific. All five principals are in great form and the Teatro Colon audience understandably eats it up. Leontyne Price probably never sang Leonora better than she does here (maybe as well, but never better). Fiorenza Cossotto nearly makes Azucena the star of the show with her flamboyant, exciting singing. From the top C down to a resonant low A, she chews up the stage in the best way. Carlo Bergonzi is Elegance defined and Piero Cappuccilli sings one of the best "Il balen"s I've ever heard. Ivo Vinco begins the opera with an excellent account of his aria. Maestro de Fabritiis knows this opera like the back of is hand and conducts a spirited account in which the chorus and orchestra also perform very well. The sound is very good for a 1969 broadcast (though one of the opening drum rolls is missing). The bonus of Price singing Liu's arias from Turandot is a rather an anti-climax as beautiful as they are. After a performance like this, one needs to rest!

SUPER
