Il Trovatore
This German-language performance of Il trovatore boasts a remarkably strong cast, with Christine Sorrell standing out as a particularly impressive Leonora. Her singing is poised and expressive, capturing the character's nobility and emotional intensity.
Robert Allman makes a solid impression as Di Luna, while Sonja Draxler brings vocal weight and color to Azucena. Ironically, the most famous name in the cast—Helge Rosvaenge—is also its weakest link. Still, credit must be given: tackling the punishing role of Manrico at the age of 65 is no small feat, and he handles its demands with undeniable technical command.

Fun Der Troubador from the Vienna Volksoper
Helge Rosvaenge was a big star in Europe before, during, and after the Second World War. He made many recordings in his prime that are extraordinary. Opera Depot released the extant portions of a 1930's Carmen he did with Inger Karen that are thrilling. He was long past his vocal prime when he gave this performance at nearly 65. The voice isn't so much wobbly as leathery, the top notes tight, but on pitch. Even in the twilight of his career though he exudes charisma.Sorrell is a lovely Leonora with a beautiful middle register and soaring high notes. She concludes Act One with an excellent D-flat and proves herself up to the challenges of Leonora's music. Sonja Draksler is an excellent Azucena. I first heard her on Beverly Sills' first recital disc in 1969 and loved the sound of her rich voice. Incidentally, the unidentified Inez in this performance is superb - who is she?Allmann is a sturdy, if woofy Di Luna and Johannes Kathol is better-than-average Ferrando. Quadri takes most of the traditional cuts, but allows Draksler the full statement of "Deh! rallentate".The sound is probably from a house tape next to the prompter as she is audible several times. The voices are easily heard over the orchestra.I enjoyed this performance a lot. If you love Trovatore you will too!

Ausgezeichnet Argeo Quadri als Dirigent. Helge Rosvaenge auch im hohen Alter noch sehr gut als Manrico. Christine Sorell ausgezeichnet als Leonore, ebenso Sonja Draxler als Zigeunerin. Eine sehr gute Aufnahme.

It is interesting recording of Il Trovatore. It was nice to hear it in German. Rosvaenge is really the weakest link, but still good, regarding that he is 65 years old here. I was impressed by beautiful singing of Christine Sorrel. She has required agility of voice in Di tale amor or in Vivra!Contende il giubilo and good phrasing in Tacea la note placida or in D'amor sull ali rosee. Australian baritone Robert Allman is a strong, powerful di Luna (perhaps not so elegant in Il balen, but a great threat to hear him, since there is only a few recordings with him. It is nice to hear Slovene mezzo/alt Sonja Draksler. Her recording are rare, also. Her singing is nice, she is powerful Azucena. She was one of the pillars of Wiener Volksoper in 60's and 70's. (No wonder why.) Draksler is the proper spelling, since Slovene language has not an x in its alphabet. Sound was ok, but noise to sound ratio is quite high and you can hear an eager prompter. However it is CD worth buying. .
