Astrid Varnay is in fresh voice here, bringing not only the dramatic firepower required for Leonora but also an unexpected finesse with the role’s coloratura demands. Helge Rosvaenge, whose tenor can occasionally feel oversized for Verdi, shows impressive control, shaping the legato lines of Manrico with elegance and power. The sound is mostly decent for a 1950s broadcast, though it does deteriorate somewhat in the final scene.
