Il Trovatore
Astrid Varnay is in fresh voice here, bringing not only the dramatic firepower required for Leonora but also an unexpected finesse with the role's coloratura demands. Helge Rosvaenge, whose tenor can occasionally feel oversized for Verdi, shows impressive control, shaping the legato lines of Manrico with elegance and power. The sound is mostly decent for a 1950s broadcast, though it does deteriorate somewhat in the final scene.

Verdi: Il Trovatore (In German) - Rosvaenge, Varnay, Schärtel, Polke; Weigert. Braunschweig, 1954
Die Wiedergabequalität ist schlecht. Doch als Bewunderer von Varnay, Rosvaenge und Schärtel lohnt sich der Kauf dieser Aufnahme. Astrid Varnay singt sehr schön lyrisch und Helge Rosvaenge gibt zum Ende seiner aufregenden Karriere einen passablen Manrico. Die Stimme ist noch bewundernswert kräftig.Elisabeth Schärtel hat einen schönen abgerundeten Mezzo-Sopran.--------------------------------------------The reproduction quality is poor. But as an admirer of Varnay, Rosvaenge and Schärtel, it is worth buying this recording. Astrid Varnay sings beautifully lyrically and Helge Rosvaenge gives a passable Manrico at the end of his exciting career. Elisabeth Schärtel has a beautifully rounded mezzo-soprano.
