$8.95

Description:

Star power alone won’t make Falstaff a success, but in this case, it certainly doesn’t hurt. Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau may seem an unlikely fit for the title role—an artist renowned for refinement and elegance cast as the bawdy, self-deluded knight. Yet it’s a testament to his artistry that he fully inhabits Falstaff’s world of taverns and trickery without sacrificing his musical integrity. He brings wit, color, and unexpected charm to the role, emerging with both dignity and comic flair.

Pilar Lorengar, despite Alice’s limited solo opportunities, impresses with her warm, inviting soprano and charismatic stage presence. Edith Mathis makes an ideal Nannetta, combining a youthful spirit with a luxuriously full tone. Luis Alva brings freshness to Fenton, though his voice could use a bit more weight in the Act III aria. Ingvar Wixell is outstanding as Ford, delivering both vocal strength and dramatic nuance.

Lorin Maazel proves to be an ideal conductor for this score. His sharp rhythmic precision, meticulous musicianship, and refined sense of ensemble result in a tightly woven, vibrant performance.
