Falstaff
Star turns in Falstaff are of little importance; what truly makes this opera work is the sense of joy it conveys. That said, it's a fortunate coincidence when an all-star cast can channel that energy and joy to elevate this masterpiece.
Fernando Corena takes on the title role, and while his voice may lack the glamor typically associated with a Verdi baritone, he strikes a fine balance between nobility and lechery. His keen acting and comedic skills shine without ever resorting to "buffo" clichés. Ilva Ligabue's Alice alternates beautifully between lyrical grace and leggiero agility. Fedora Barbieri delivers a larger-than-life Quickly, formidable enough to stand toe-to-toe with the oversized knight. Mirella Freni is at her ethereal best as Nanetta, while Luigi Alva brings elegance and charm to Fenton.
Under the direction of Carlo Maria Giulini, the orchestra bursts with vitality from the opening chords and sustains that energy and joy through to the final fugue.
