Ernani
Ernani is truly early Verdi at its best. And the performances in this recording do much to show why. Antonietta Stella is perhaps the ideal exponent of Elvira, managing the lyric, spinto and coloratura aspects of this role with equal ease. Gastone Limarilli brings a somewhat monochromatic tone and a lack of nuance to the title role, yet still manages to impress with the remarkable control he has over his large tenor. Cornell MacNeil's voice had the color of a bass with the high notes of a tenor and he uses those extremes to his advantage as Carlo.

Excellent Performance in Excellent Sound!
Some critics insist that Stella was past her prime by 1965, but this performance shows that that wasn't at all true. She is in fine voice here with no trouble at the top and as flexible as she needs to be in the coloratura. Her colleagues are all excellent too. Maybe Limarelli isn't as nuanced or subtle as others, but he sounds like the iconoclastic bandit to the life. He was considered very much a third-stringer in 1965; today he'd be welcomed with open arms.MacNeil was a force of nature. His voice had developed a beat by this point and wasn't a model of steadiness. But when he launched it in the top register, watch out! He knocks out a huge high note in Act Three that has the audience applauding even before he has finished singing it! Arie was a similarly taken-for-granted bass who would clean up more today.The sound is very good. There is some bumping around in the Act Four chorus, probably from an overly enthusiastic dance troop. Ernani has to be sung well and with excitement for it to work and that's what happens here.
