The ideal Elvira in Ernani must combine the agility of a Gilda with the vocal weight of an Aida—no small feat—and Pauline Tinsley delivers on both counts. Her performance is marked by flexibility, power, and the intense dramatic commitment that became her hallmark.
Donald Smith brings burly lyricism to the title role, his sound well-suited to Verdi's writing for the romantic hero. Robert Bickerstaff, as Carlo, delivers a performance that stands shoulder to shoulder with many of the top Verdi baritones of his era—musically assured and vocally commanding.

Great Performance, Excellent Sound!
Sadler's Wells really knew how to do Verdi back in the 1960's and 70's and this Ernani is no exception. Donald Smith was a very fine tenor, especially in this repertoire, and his Ernani is sung with ringing, handsome tone. He even manages to make the character sympathetic. Tinsley is magnificent as Elvira, a true Verdi soprano with an exciting top and beautiful tone, replete with an excellent trill and skillful passage work. She interpolates an elaborate cadenza between verses of her opening cabaletta. I only wish she had been allowed to ornament the second verse as Verdi would have expected. Robert Bickerstaff is a very fine Don Carlo and Clifford Grant infuses Silva with class and style. Bryan Balkwill is usually underrated as a Verdi conductor and he shows why here with his lithe, energetic leadership. The Pirate Gods looked down on this broadcast happily and the sound is clear and present. The translation is usually easy to understand.
