This performance of Verdi's early masterpiece Ernani is driven with electrifying intensity by Dmitri Mitropoulos, whose conducting is nothing short of masterful. He propels the opera's occasionally improbable plot with unrelenting momentum, injecting dramatic urgency into every scene. Rarely has Mitropoulos's gift for shaping long musical arcs and elevating second-tier repertoire been more evident.

Mario Del Monaco, in excellent voice, brings his signature vocal firepower to the title role. While he may show little interest in the dramatic intricacies of the libretto, his singing is undeniably thrilling. Boris Christoff, by contrast, is a committed vocal actor, bringing a dark, menacing authority to his role—even if his bass can sound strained at the extremes. Ettore Bastianini delivers regal authority with every phrase, and Anita Cerquetti makes a strong case as the woman at the center of it all, her voice radiant and impassioned.
