Though recorded toward the end of her career, Liane Synek makes a compelling case for casting a soprano as Eboli. Her performance is both vocally secure and interpretively bold, revealing a depth of expression that brings new dimension to the role. All of Eboli's music is included in these excerpts, providing a full portrait of Synek's striking interpretation.
While the rest of the cast is generally serviceable, it's Synek's presence that gives this recording its distinctive value.

Late-vintage Synek
Liane Synek is heard here trying to redeploy into the *Zwischenfach* but it can only be counted a partial success. There's a lot of strenuous heaving about of the voice and ventures into the upper register are done on a wing and a prayer. I was far more impressed by Ella Lee's Elisabeth of Valois and the lyrical Carlo of Robert Thomas (where was he when we needed him?). Rolf Kühne is an uncouth Posa while Eduard Wollitz makes a Fafner-like Philip II. The CD is filled out with generous excerpts from a 1965 "Maskenball" which show Synek to far greater advantage and save this recording from a three-star rating.
