Good Performance, Missing Music!

I already reviewed a later performance from this run (OD 11947) and concluded it represented a German tradition of altering the ending to reflect Schiller's original play. This performance from earlier in the run has some different singers in the lead roles; Kozub and Dalis are in both. The performing edition is the same. Both recordings have missing scenes. In the later performance the final scene has been lost so it is completed with the final scene from this one. This one is missing the entire Philip/Rodrigo scene from the end of Act One. In addition, other snippets are missing throughout, causing one to sigh with frustration and dismay.Kozub and Dalis are excellent in both performances. Lang and Watson are both lovely as Elisabetta (I preferred Lang in some parts, Watson in others). Crass is far superior to Van Mill's capable, dry singing. Wohlansky and Rudzak are equally fine. The sound is uneven in both. If forced to choose I'd take the later recording with Crass and Watson.

Kozub sings Verdi

A good cast, particularly Edith Lang in her last aria "Du, im irdischen Wahn"/"Tu che le vanita", in large voice, good bass notes and true pianisssimos, and Irene Dalis, although she seems be in trouble at the end of "Verhängnisvoll war das Geschenk"/"O don fatale".Kozub is at the peak of his too short career, not only a well-known wagnerian, but an absolute dramatic and spinto tenor, in splendid and stentorian voice, with beautiful sweet phrasings, and powerful and easy B's flat and B's natural. There is some troubles at beginning or ending of some tracks, for example, the last scene between Carlos and Posa begins directly with Posa's first aria, or the end of the following scene abruptly cuted and connected to the prelude of last act.Another (big) regret is the missing of the complete scene Filippo/Posa at the end of first act. Cut during the performance ? not recorded or simply forgotten ?
